QUINTA DO CRASTO

Featured Producer

Quinta do Crasto is located on the right bank of the river Douro, halfway between Régua and Pinhão.

The quinta covers 130 hectares, of which 70 are planted with grade “A” vineyards. Sitting on a privileged location in the Douro Demarcated Region, Quinta do Crasto has been in the family of Leonor and Jorge Roquette for over a century. Like other great Douro quintas, its origins lie in ancient times (the name CRASTO comes from the Latin word castrum, a Roman fort). References to Quinta do Crasto date as far back as the early seventeenth century, long before the Douro became the world’s first demarcated wine region in 1756.

In 2002, the two families decided to set up a company to produce great wines that would be distinguished by the natural characteristics of the Douro Valley and by the experience of the Cazes, who have been producing wines in Bordeaux for nearly a century.

The winemakers Dominic Morris and Manuel Lobo, together with the effort and dedication of all those who are part of Quinta do Crasto’s team, seek to produce wines with the Douro’s unique characteristics in a process that involves great dedication and passion.

These are wines are proof that there is huge potential for Potugal to produce stunning wines, as well as the port that made it famous. These wines show huge range, from the fresh vibrant Crasto White through to the complexity, balance and structure of the glorious Vinha Maria Theresa.

Lagavulin 1994 Distiller's Edition £6.50

A really distinctive and distinguished dram, full of peat while the Pedro Ximinez sherry wood naturally has a big say; on the nose there is intense peat and vanilla while a raisin sweetness checks the smoke. Iodine-edged peat and crisp, roasty malt.

On the palate it is sweet and luscious; a clear, grassy malt, then the peat attacks, smoke filling the mouth. A very salty tang at one point; the middle offers coffee and vanilla with a glimmer of fruit.

Incredibly long, even for Islay. Fruit, peat and long-lasting oak. Very chewable and “more-ish”.
